Getting through the photos I took at the orchid show is going to take a little time. I took about 400 images, and I hope to get a dozen or so that I'm really pleased with. I shot all in raw...a first for me. But I'm starting to get my arms around raw conversion and the editorial control I have with that. It's kindda cool.
The show was more complicated to shoot than you might expect. First of all, they did not allow tripods or monopods. I image this is because they didn't want photographers with tripods blocking the flow through the conservatory. It wasn't immensely crowded. But there were school groups as well as individuals with limited mobility. I can see were a tripod or two (or six) in the mix would have been problematic.
The other big issue was that the light was highly variable. We had to work with the light and shadow that was always changing. I spent a lot of time fiddling with controls and previewing what I'd shot to get close on the exposure. As I mentioned in my earlier entry...it was therapeutic in that I had my mind involved in what I was doing and not all the things that have recently been eating at me. That was really the point of the day.
Coincidentally, on the way home I was listening to a podcast that I'd downloaded from Nikonians.org, and they discussed a conservatory photo shoot and all the inherent issues especially when working hand held. How reassuring to hear that what I had just experienced was not bumbling ineptness....but common problems in that environment.
As an aside...I have learned that they offer workshops and classes at the botanical gardens on floral photography. I see one of those in my future.
So, here are the first of the images that are ready for posting. I'm sure I'll put up two or three moreas I can. I tried to choose to illustrate the range of color present in the exhibit. It was a real feast for the eyes and the soul.

These turned out great....especially for hand holding. This is where image stabilization really comes in nice. I've faced similar conditions and they really do push a photographer's envelope when you are trying to achieve nice sharp images.

I am terrible about using a tripod so I know how hard it is to come up with sharp images. The shots are great. I love close up of flowers.
